The famous image of the the pastel coloured houses of fishing village Corricella spilling down the hill could easily be mistaken for Positano on the Amalfi Coast, but it’s actually the relatively well kept secret of Procida, just 40 mins from Naples by ferry.

I say well kept secret, Italians of course are well aware of the charm of this small island, but you’ll tend to find international tourists mostly opt for a day visit from Naples, or overlook Procida entirely in favour of its bigger sister, Ischia.

I fell a little bit in love with Procida after staying there for a couple of nights, and regularly dream of returning for longer for some rest and relaxation. It’s a small island, and there’s a certain sleepiness that comes with that which lends itself well to a peaceful break. The people are charming, the streets are pretty (shouldn’t all places have pastel coloured buildings?) and there are excellent places to eat and drink.

WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK ON PROCIDA

Ristorante Pizzeria Fuego
Via Marina di Corricella, 45, 80079

We hid from the rain in Ristorante Pizzeria Fuego on our arrival on Procida, and I promptly ate the best dish of my three week trip in Italy. And no, despite the name of the restaurant it wasn’t pizza! Tortellini stuffed with pistachio and burrata, served with prawns – my God. SO good.

La Pergola
Via Salette, 10, 80079

One of the few restaurants not set by the marinas dotted around Procida, La Pergola is set in a picturesque garden, with candlelit tables tucked under a pergola covered in lemon trees. La Pergola serves a classic Italian menu of seafood, pasta and rabbit. Book to avoid disappointment.

La Lampara
Via Marina di Corricella, 88, 80079

The view of the pretty coloured houses of Corricella from La Lampara’s terrace makes it the perfect place for a bowl of pasta and a cold glass of wine. Particularly lovely if you’re visiting Procida as a day trip and want to enjoy lunch with a beautiful view.

Il Pescatore
Via Marina di Corricella, 63, 80079

Beautiful restaurant situated underneath the San Michele Boutique Hotel, run by the same owners. The boho chic design means that even dining here on a rainy day would be a joy, and that’s before you consider the excellent quality of the food.

La Locanda del Postino
Via Marina di Corricella, 43, 80079

Perfectly situated on the marina of Corricella, La Locanda del Postino has a large terrace and serves up excellent seafood. Bonus points: you can make reservations online via their website, always handy to peak travel times.

Bufalino Steakhouse
Piazzetta MASSIMO TROISI, Via Marina di Corricella, 59, 80079

As is to be expected on any small island, seafood tends to be the predominant cuisine. If you’re after a change from fresh prawns and seafood linguine, head to Bufalino Steakhouse.

Florentine steak, tartare, burgers and an excellent cheese and charcuterie board are all on the menu at Bufalino, situated in pretty Corricella.

Il Casotto
Lungomare Cristoforo Colombo, 18, 80079

Found by Chiaiolella beach, Il Casotto is a takeaway kiosk serving pastas, salads, meatballs and street food snacks. Perfect to take back to your patch of beach and enjoy in the sunshine.

Il Vefio Di Procida
Via Libertà, 75, 80079

Being so close to Naples, it would be wrong not to have some traditional Napoli pizza during your time on Procida. Head to Il Vefio Di Procida, located inland about halfway between the ferry port and Corricella, where they serve excellent pizza for as little as €7.

Chiaro di Luna Bar Gelateria
Via Marina di Corricella, 87, 80079

Excellent gelateria to get your gelato fix after the walk up to the viewpoint overlooking the beautiful coloured houses of Corricella.

Dal Cavaliere
Via Roma, 42, 80079

Great spot for a pastry and coffee on arrival from catching the ferry to Procida, or a well timed aperitivo before heading back to the mainland. Try one of the local pastries, the lingue di Procida – an oblong shaped puff pastry filled with cream flavoured with lemons from the island. Delicious.

Malazzè
Via Marina di Corricella, 73, 80079

Cute place by the marina in Corricella open all day: espresso and breakfast through the morning, great sandwiches at lunch and aperitivo cocktails as the day moves into evening.

Lido Vivara
Lungomare Cristoforo Colombo, 4, 80079

The perfect spot for a sundowner on Procida, Lido Vivara is a bar and restaurant on Chiaiolella beach. The food is on the fancier and pricier side, but if the budget doesn’t stretch to dinner here, enjoying a cocktail on the rooftop as the day draws to a close is a great alternative. It’s a beautiful place to watch the sun set.

THINGS TO DO ON PROCIDA

Procida is a very small island, so if you’re staying there, your time on the island will likely be a chilled one full of sun, sea, sand and good food. A lot of people do a day trip to Procida from Naples rather than stay, and it’s a great choice – and a must do from Naples or neighbouring Ischia. I stayed for a couple of nights, and I’d definitely stay there again for the slow pace, peace and quiet.

Corricella View Point

The fishing village of Corricella is the most famous part of Procida. The viewpoint that overlooks the village is the most famous image of the island, with all the houses built on the hill painted a different shade of pastel hue.

It really is beautiful, and it’s well worth taking the steep path up to the viewpoint to get the best view of the village before wandering down for an al fresco lunch.

Spend the day at Maresia Solarium

For €15 pp you can spend the day at the pool at Maresia Rooms, just above Chiaiolella beach. You can stay all day, using the pool and sunbeds in the gardens with sweeping sea views.

Lunch and drinks were reasonably priced, and come the end of the day you’re in prime location to watch the sun go down on the beach. Email ahead to book.

Relax on the Beach

Procida has many black sand beaches due to the volcanic nature of the area (you’ve all heard of Pompeiii) and the best one on the islands is the free Chiaiolella beach.

There are a few restaurants to eat along here, a place to grab takeaway food for lunch and spots to grab an aperitivo come sundown, for which the beach is perfectly positioned. Sunbeds and parasols are also available for hire for the day.

Wander the Pretty Streets

I highly recommend having a wander along the pretty streets from the ferry port to the village of Corricella, especially if you’re only on Procida for a day trip. This walk will take just 15 mins without stopping, but do factor in time to stop by the little shops and coloured houses.

Have lunch in beautiful Corricella after going up to the viewpoint and before heading back to the port for your ferry back to Naples or Ischia.

Day Trip to Ischia

If you’re staying on the island and not planning on going onto Procida’s big sister for a few nights, take a short ferry ride over to Ischia for the day to explore the island.

Depending on the ferry the trip is as little as 15 minutes duration, the islands are that close! Ischia absolutely deserves its’ own exploration, even if for a day if you can’t spare the time to stay longer.

WHERE TO STAY ON PROCIDA

San Michele Boutique Hotel

This bohemian style design hotel is my dream place to stay on Procida. Sitting in the pretty village of Corricella, it’s perfectly situated for many of the best restaurants in the island – including the hotel’s very own Il Pescatore, which does an incredible breakfast for guests.

The rooms are stunning, all white wash and natural materials, and one suite boasts a wonderful terrace complete with sunbeds and hammock. Book here.

Casa Giovanni da Procida

I stayed at Casa Giovanni da Procida during my time on the island and it was a lovely, quiet and friendly place to stay. I loved the coloured walls and simple breakfast served in the serene gardens – highly recommend the traditional Procida puff pastry filled with lemon cream to start your day.

Perfect for a short stay, just a 20 min walk in either direction to the marina at Coriccella or Chiaiolella beach. Book here.

Maresia Procida

Maresia has one of the best locations on the island, situated at the end of Chiaiolella beach. The pool and the gardens it is set in have expansive sea and sunset views, with steps that lead directly onto the beach.

Rooms have a slight nautical theme to them, with terraces that open onto the pool and garden, and there are restaurants and a bus stop to the rest of the island nearby. Book here.

Cala Cala Rooms, Restaurant & Farm Experience

Another beautiful small hotel based out of an old farmhouse, Cala Cala Rooms is complete with inviting swimming pool, hot tub and pool bar for guests to enjoy.

Breakfast will be made using local produce from the farmhouse garden, as is the beautifully presented food served from the on site Cala Cala restaurant. Book here.

Insula Boutique Hotel

With an inviting pool set in manicured gardens and Chiaia Beach a few minutes walk away, Insula Boutique Hotel has the best of both worlds.

There are just 10 rooms, meaning your stay will be quiet and personable. Insula’s breakfast are excellent, and there is a hot tub and pool bar for guests to enjoy too. Book here.

GETTING TO PROCIDA

Procida is a quick 40 minute ferry from Naples, and the ferries run relatively regularly, around every 45 minutes. You can book directly to avoid disappointment at Direct Ferries – recommended if you’re travelling over in the car and/or at peak times.

GETTING AROUND PROCIDA

Procida is very small, so a lot of the island can be reached on foot – for example when you arrive at the ferry port, it’s only 15 minutes walk to the beautiful village of Corricella (the most photographed part of the island).

Bicycles are available for hire to get around, which is a good call if you’re staying on the island, but there is also a bus service, with 4 lines across Procida.

As with most bus tickets in Italy, they can be purchased from tobacconists and newsstands in advance for €1.20 or onboard the bus for €1.40. Tickets last for 60 minutes from purchase.

The buses are very small in order to fit along the narrow streets of Procida, so allow extra time if you have a ferry to catch in case you can’t get on the first one!
